Welcome to the library research guide for African American History and Culture to 1860 (1865). 

In this guide you will find a variety of resources that will help you with your research for this course including for your primer assignment. Highlights of the guide include: 

  • links to primary source material including: slave narratives, photos and images for the time period, slavery in the law, runaway ads, and anti-slavery pamphlets, newspapers, speeches, and more;
  • information on how to understand primary resources;
  • links to relevant library databases and instructions on how to search for books and articles;
