Language First is an organization which aims to educate and raise awareness about American Sign Language (ASL)/English bilingualism and the importance of a strong first language foundation for Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children and, whose mission statement reads, "Every Deaf child has the right to learn a first language effortlessly."
An excerpt of their letter follows:
We are writing as Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing professionals with extensive experience working with, researching, and advocating for Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) infants, toddlers,
and children. The American Civil Liberties Union of Delaware (ACLU-DE)’s recent complaint filed with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) against the Delaware
Department of Education (DDOE) raises significant concerns among experts in the field of deaf education, as it is grounded in misinformation and outdated evidence about DHH children’s
language acquisition.
