Many scholarly writings and creative works are protected by copyright.

This guide identifies resources that are free to use, either because they are in the public domain or because they have been asigned a Creative Commons license:

  • Public Domain Resources: Items that are no longer covered by copyright
  • Creative Commons Licensed Resources: Materials that the creator has given permission for others to use freely
    • Open Access Resources: Online scholarly writings that are available free of charge and most copyright and licensing restrictions, often by a creative commons license
    • Open Educational Resources: Resources that allow for reuse, retention, revision, redistribution, and remixing
