What is Kanopy?

Kanopy: Embed Films, Clips, and Playlists Into a Canvas Course

"Kanopy: Embed Films, Clips, and Playlists Into a Canvas Course," created December 2020, 3 minutes.

How do I access Kanopy?

Access to Kanopy is available:

  • From our A-Z list of databases. If you are off campus, you will be prompted to authenticate by putting in your OASIS# and last name.
  • From https://colum.kanopy.com/. If you are off campus, you will need to sign up for a Kanopy account using your Columbia email.
  • From the Kanopy app available for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Android, Android TV, Chromecast, Roku, Fire TV, and Fire Tablet. You will need to sign up for a Kanopy account using your Columbia email or sign in if you have already created a Kanopy account.
  • By searching for the film in the library catalog (use the main search box on the library homepage or directly in the catalog). In the catalog record there will be a link directly to the film (see image below). If you are off-campus, you will be prompted to enter your OASIS# and last name in order to view the film.

Why are there films in Kanopy that I cannot watch?

You will see this message at the top of all pages in Kanopy: "Access is currently limited, as per your library's request. For any titles that you are uable to access, please fill out the request form on that film's page."

Here is what it means: You will be able to search for films in the Kanopy collection through the library catalog or directly through the Kanopy website or app; however, the library must first purchase a one-year license to the film before it can be viewed. If you try to watch a film in Kanopy for which we do not yet have a license, you will be prompted to complete a request form (see below) for the film. Library staff will review your request. Film licenses can be purchased and access to the film made available in a short time; usually two business days. Priority is given to films that are requested by faculty for use in a course. Access to a film will remain for one year from the date of purchase.
