Introduction

Welcome to the library research guide for Black Artistry and the Archive!

In this guide you will find a variety of resources that will help you with your research for this course. Highlights of the guide include: 

  • background information on the South Side Community Art Center
  • tips on how to research Black Artists
  • how to find books and articles from the library's catalog and databases
  • links to relevant archives and digital collections
  • links to the library's Chicago newspaper subscriptions including the Chicago Defender Historical Archive which will be a key resource for your research
  • instructions on how to use Artstor, a database of high resolution images from a variety of museums and cultural institutions
  • and instructions on how to request an interlibrary loan, format citations, and create an annotated bibliography.
